NSO-La Union hosts RPW
“NSO Gearing for Global Challenges.” This was the theme of the 2009 Regional Planning Workshop (RPW) hosted by the National Statistics Office-La Union held at Coconut Grove, Paringao, Bauang, La Union on December 17-19, 2008. Inspired by all their queries. The socials done on the first night of the three-day activity was filled with high energy and laughter. The Christmas-filled presentations showcased the participants’ talents in singing and dancing. RD Batoy and the four PSOs also prepared a dance number in the fifties which got a warm round of applause. Games prepared exhausted the participants reserved energy which was replenished with the bountiful finger foods set in an ambiance of relaxation as the party continued on the dinner tables set beside the seashore. Indeed, we are. Our battle is against hunger, poverty, unemployment, economic crisis and stagnation. The Philippines according to the 2007 Census has reached over 88 million in population. A larger population leads to a higher demand in national resources. Therefore, the government is prioritizing economic stability.

San Gabriel
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The town of San Gabriel is within the eastern part of the province of La Union. It was formerly called "Baka Burnotan," which means tug-of-war, a popular game among the settlers. It was then one of the sitios of San Juan. This was pastureland of the residents of adjacent sitios and it was where the shepherds gathered themselves together and played "Binurnnotan." In later years, the name sitio "Baka Burnotan" was shortened to "Burnotan."
The wide plain and fertile soil of Sitio Burnotan attracted nearby residents to settle in the area. All of the native settlers were engaged in farming as their source of livelihood. They have their own relgion called Sagrada Familia, which was found by a man named Lok-king. In the later part of 1880, the Spaniards inddoctrinated the native settlers to the Roman Catholic faith through a priest named Redondo. The Spanish priest introduced the icon of Saint Gabriel and later on became their patron saint. Read more
